Social Media Analysis

One of our current research studies focuses on social media marketing and WOM. We have developed Twitter-Tracker to monitor conversations on Twitter

tweet

"In the last few years, three concurrent and interrelated trends have been shaping the world of social media: a) social broadcasting platforms and communities have been growing rapidly; b) more success examples and studies have been pointing to the role of social media in increasing consumer awareness and sale; and c) companies have been increasing their budget and spending on their social media marketing. According to the Chief Marketing Officers (CMOs’) survey of 468 US companies across different industries, “social media spending as a percentage of marketing budgets will more than double over the next five years.” In 2013, an impressive 8.4 percent of marketing budgets was spent on social media. This number is expected to raise to 21.6 percent by 2016 ..."

Related work on social media and crowdfunding: Please Share! Online Word of Mouth and Charitable Crowdfunding

"During the last few years, charitable crowdfunding has become an increasingly popular method of online fundraising for personal and charitable causes. Many such crowdfunding platforms encourage and facilitate the use of online word of mouth (WOM) through social networks and social media, to spread the word about the crowdfunding campaigns ... "

KnowledgeMap

We have developed the MISKnowledgemap, an automated classification of research areas in the field of Information Systems

KnowledgeMap

In this document, we describe the concept and use of KnowledgeMap, an interactive visualization and classification tool for exploring communities of research in a scientific discipline. We define an aggregated measure of association between documents, based on their text, their references, and how they are cited by other documents. This aggregated measure is then used to develop a document classification algorithm and a web-based interactive visualization tool. We demonstrate the application of the algorithm and the tool for the Information Systems (IS) discipline by analyzing all publications in top IS journals during the last ten years. The KnowledgeMap tool will benefit IS researchers and practitioners alike by providing a holistic view of the field, identifying active and emergent areas of research, and facilitating the process of finding relevant publications in top IS journals.

The Effect of “Following” on Contributions To Open Source Communities

OSS

"Online communities have been growing rapidly in the last two decades and at the same time becoming more diverse. Millions of internet users actively contribute to various types of online communities ranging from user generated contents and social media to collaborative content communities, on a daily bases. Although numerous studies have examined members’ motivation to contribute to such communities, the positive effect of social factors has not been unanimously confirmed in different settings. In this study, we estimate the effect of “online following,” a basic form of online social interaction, on members’ contributions in open source software (OSS) communities. This estimation is based on analysis of a large-scale dataset of 4 million online members and their interactions over 7 years, collected from the largest OSS community. The results have implications for online community designers and OSS scholars.""
