I grew up in Florence, Kentucky, and I went to the same high school as Shaun Alexander, formerly of the Seahawks. After high school, I went to Caltech to get an electrical engineering degree, and I also played division III basketball, which was essentially a study in humility and pain. In 1990, I took an engineering position with McDonnell Douglas at Cecil Field Naval Air Station in Jacksonville, Florida repairing F/A-18 avionics, where I learned how to use all sorts of tools. While I was there, McDonnell Douglas paid for me to get an MBA at the University of North Florida, pretty much the only game in town. Upon finishing the MBA, I decided to get a Ph.D. in finance and I attended the University of Illinois. My first job out of school was at the University of Florida, and I've been here ever since.
My hobbies include finance, the psychology of happiness, sports (golf, basketball, football, softball; I'm a Gators, Bears, Bulls, and Cubs fan), virtually all music (except for male country), cats, photography (click here for pics!), and home remodeling. If you find a good trading strategy, a good article or book on happiness, a good finance-related video, a good picture large enough to put on a screen saver, or a good song, send me the link!
